The Challenge

Sunrun, a home solar and battery storage pioneer, has been actively enabling demand response and capacity services to build a more resilient electricity system across the country. Seeking more ways to elevate their climate and grid stability contributions, Sunrun was looking for opportunities to grow their grid services footprint in California while limiting the operational burden and risks associated with participating in wholesale markets.

The Solution

Sunrun partnered with Leap to expand their grid services activity in California with an eye towards scale, automation and building long-term value. Leap’s flexible model enabled Sunrun to easily integrate Leap’s platform into their portfolio, test new grid services programs and grow their operations without taking on additional operational burdens and market risk. Thanks to the ability to contract out multiple years, Sunrun can more closely align their grid services offerings with the lifetime value they associate with their battery systems.

Leap’s automated, software-only solution, paired with our dedicated team of energy market and partner success experts, has made it simple and fast to enroll new solar and battery systems into California grid services programs and optimize dispatching performance. After working together for multiple years, Sunrun has built a sizable portfolio with Leap and was able to make significant contributions to support the grid in California during the 2022 summer heatwaves.

Highlights

California September 2022
Heat Wave Performance:

1,232  kWh energy delivered

500+ batteries dispatched

“Leap worked with us to implement a partnership model that fit our unique needs and complemented our existing portfolio. Together with Leap, we’ve driven new revenue, engaged more customers with our grid service offerings and advanced our clean energy contributions.”
